BARANGAYS

  • Pugalo

The name of the barangay is derived from the words Puga which means to break out of confinement and Alo nickname.
At a time during Spanish occupation, Alo a convicted prisoner was sentenced to die. The night before his
execution he broke out of jail and hid in the place. Eventually the place was called Pugalo, the home of the escapes Alo.

  • Poblacion
In the beginning the place was called Holomaynon, after humay, the vernacular for rice, an upland variety
which was grown with the area. Cotton was also grown but the dominant crops was rice.

In the year 1873 a small church and a common house or Casa Real was constructed in Holomaynon in anticipation
of the impending transfer of the township from Mambaje as ordered by the Spanish friars. The transfer was
suggested by Maestro Julian Villareal to the Spanish rulers fearing that Molobolo (now El Pardo) the seat
of government of Boljoon might be annexed to Alcoy since it immediately abuts, Mambaje, the seat of government
of Alcoy. The transfer took place in 1874.

The parish priest of Boljoon who was also the interim parish priest of Alcoy constructed roads around the small
church and the casa real and declared the place as the Poblacion or the town center.

  • Daanlungsod
Along time ago this place was unoccupied and nameless. This was under the jurisdiction of the Curate of
Boljoon who urged the poor and the landless to migrate and settle this place. The early settlers were
favourable because of its fertile soil vast space and availability of water.

The settlement flourished and the settles called the place Maybaje, after bahi, the slatted trunk of the
palm tree called patikan, sagisi or pungahan which abounds in the area extensively used as flooring materials
particular, in the kitchen area due to its resistance to water. After a time the name evolved to Mambaje the
              way the Spaniards pronounced it.

On July 16, 1867 Mambaje was declared a municipality under a Captain Municipal appointed by the Parish Priest
and concurred by the Provincial Government. The first Captain Municipal was Roberto Medellin.

In 1868 the place was changed to Alcoy after a town of the same name in the Province of Alicante, Spain.

At that time the seat of government of Boljoon was in Molobolo which is adjacent to Alcoy and the Boljoanons
fearing that Molobolo might be annexed to Alcoy urged the Parish Priest to transfer the township of Alcoy.
This was done in 1874 during the incumbency of Captain Municipal Gregorio Niere. Thus Holomaynon become the new
seat of government or the Polacion and Mambaje became the Old Town or Daanlungsod.

  • Guiwang
Once upon a time the place was nameless and uninhabited perhaps due to the lack of water. The place
was a farmland owned by a few people from neighboring barangays. Farmers in the place use to draw
water by digging pits in the seashore until seepage water accumulate in the hole. This water is slightly
salty because it is contaminated with sea water and it is called guiwanon.

One day a group of Spaniards came upon a native carrying water from the guiwanon in a hollowed-out bamboo
trunk called sag-ob. One of the Spaniards approached the native and ask the name of the place. The native
did not understand the foreign tongue and thinking that he was asked what he is carrying he answered
guiwanon. It did happen that when he answered a horse tethered nearby brayed, thus the last syllable of
his answer was not heard. The Spaniards return to his group and told his companions that the place is called
Guiwang and it has been its name since then.

  • Nug-as

A long time ago the place was thickly forested. Plenty of hunters came to hunt. Among the first to
come and settle from place unknown was a couple named Nug and his wife Apas. They cleared a piece
              of land and started cultivation.

The couple usually wore black clothes and the superstitious folks taught they were witches, so the
people avoided to the place which was called as the home of Nug and Apas.

When the Spaniards came and named the villages that was what the place was known until eventually evolved to the present name Nug-as.

  • Pasol
The barangay derived its name from the fishing paraphernalia called locally as pasol or baited hook and line.

A long time ago the place was nameless. Most of the inhabitants were fishermen. One day the Spaniard soldiers
visited the place and they asked a child what the name of the place is. The child not understanding what he
was asked thought that the Spaniards was asking for his father who was in the sea fishing so he answer “PASOL”.

Believing that it was the name of the place the name remains until today.

  • San Agustin
San Agustin was in the beginning called Cabalungan, a sitio of Guiwang. The residents aspired for
barangay-hood and with the help of Mr. Lamberto Carungay, a Presidential Assistance on Community
Development (PACD) Municipal Development Officer, this was approved in 1973.

Since the country was still under martial law the barangay-hood was not immediately implemented.
In 1978 during the incumbency of Provincial Governor Osmundo Rama. Its barangay-hood was finally
implemented. The surrounding sitios of Cang-ilog, Cansalingsing, Cang-ampok and Manga-it were
annexed to Cabalungan which changed its name to San Agustin.

  • Atabay
A long time ago people living in this barangay depends on rain and from the sap of the banana trunk
for water. The place has no water source. When the Spaniards came, they tried to teach the natives
to find underground water by digging wells or Atabay.

The people started digging wells but unfortunately, no water was found. Since plenty of wells were dug
in the village the waterless holes or atabay identified the village and the names stuck.

Thus until today the barangay is called Atabay.
